Farmers Access to Regional Markets (FARMS®) is an innovative agri-business supply chain model developed by the Rural Development Center (RDC) at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). FARMS addresses universal problems facing small farmers around the world, particularly those associated with business risk. It leverages market forces to effectively and practically address these problems while creating a sustainable economic engine that encourages investment by industry and drives growth.

The FARMS model can also be viewed as a “network” because it leverages appropriate greenhouse technology, an agri-business with expertise in growing, market demand, and a strong market. The RDC at UMES has partnered successfully with the public and private sectors to identify and connect these components to demonstrate that FARMS is a viable and successful model. It adds value to all stakeholders in the agri-business supply chain while providing small farmers with:
  • Access to regional markets
  • Reduced risk
  • An increase in profitability
